NASA Patented Anti-Gravity Treadmill
PALM GARDEN OF VERO BEACH HAS BEEN PART OF THE INDIAN RIVER COUNTY COMMUNITY SINCE 1986. THERE HAVE BEEN, HOWEVER, FANTASTIC CHANGES THAT EXHIBIT THEIR NEW MOTTO “WHERE WE ARE COMMITTED TO LEADING BY EXAMPLE.”
Palm Garden of Vero Beach, one of 14 skilled nursing centers, one assisted living and home health agencies in Florida, has recently undergone a transformation to redefine rehabilitation under the leadership of Pat McCarver.
For over 20 years, Mrs. McCarver and her husband James McCarver leased the properties to other management companies. After the passing of Mr. James McCarver in 2012, Mrs. McCarver made it her life’s mission to create a compassionate environment for each person entrusted in our care.
Mrs. McCarver and team began the journey of rebranding Palm Garden.
Late 2013, Mrs. McCarver took over active management and began to recruit the best talent in the industry to manage her newly Incorporated Palm Healthcare Management and all Palm Garden facilities. Her passion envelops everyone that is part of the organization to provide an experience that addresses the whole person’s physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being.
In addition to the focus on providing exceptional quality care, Palm Garden of Vero Beach, along with the other 13 health and rehabilitation centers, are being renovated. A considerable amount of time, planning, money and designing is being invested in Palm Garden centers and equipment to create an atmosphere where Palm Garden is not considered just another place to go for post-acute care.
According to Erelyn Hicks, Executive Director of Palm Garden of Vero Beach, “It is extraordinary how much has been done in such a short period of time. I am happy to have been part of it.”

Among the changes, Palm Garden of Vero Beach has increased its number of private rooms from ten to 26 private suites in an effort to make each guest feel more comfortable during their rehab stay. The entire center is undergoing renovations that include new flooring, new furniture and new décor for each room, restaurant style dining as well as the addition of eclectic artwork.
Ms. Hicks expects Palm Garden of Vero Beach will be the “Number One Provider of Choice. We want people that need rehabilitation and extended medical care to know Palm Garden as a household name.”

The team members at Palm Garden of Vero Beach consider everyone we provide care to as extended family. According to Gail Boylan, RN, Director of Clinical Services, “so many of our long-term residents have out-of-town children. We become their children. Just because we’re older it doesn’t mean we stop living. We still have hopes and goals and need our simple pleasures, whether it’s chocolate or having someone bring in their dog.”
In an effort to personalize every new guest’s experience, team members interview new admissions to determine their life stories. Where did they grow up, what was their profession, how many children do they have, did they play sports, did they have pets and so forth? By understanding these life stories everyone involved with their care can create a more personal relationship. “We work to eliminate loneliness, helplessness and boredom.”
Now to the Anti-Gravity Treadmill:
Palm Garden is the only Skilled Nursing Facility in Vero Beach with an Anti-Gravity Treadmill using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Patented Technology.
The benefit of this innovative technology, initially invented by NASA for astronauts, reduces your body weight as much as 80% by controlling gravity through air pressure. In this way it enables patients with a hip replacement, for example, who would not otherwise be able to walk, to walk or jog freely without stress or strain on joints, to improve balance and control without fear of falling and to build strength and coordination.
Here is a video we took demonstrating the operation of the treadmill.

Palm Garden of Vero Beach is also involved in the health and well-being of the community they serve. As an example of how Palm Garden is extending itself to better the lives of each resident and the community at large, they host monthly meetings for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society.
Participants of the monthly meeting come from as far North as Titusville and South as Port St. Lucie, Florida. “There is not a lot of support for MS in the community and we are happy to have opened our doors for a place they can meet,” said Mrs. Hicks.
In closing, please say hello to Mr. Hayes and his happy place. Mr. Hayes has been a happy long-term resident of Palm Garden for three years. He is one of many residents that have been and continue to be the reason team members at Palm Garden of Vero Beach love coming to work every day.
