ON JULY 19, 2016 WE WROTE A VERY WELL READ ARTICLE ON THE MIKE BLOCK STRING CAMP IN VERO BEACH, FL THAT WENT “LIVE” IN 2010 WITH OVER 60 STUDENTS COMING FROM ALL OVER THE US, AS WELL AS CANADA AND ENGLAND.
Ever since, the Mike Block String Camp has grown to include a second week of instruction for advanced players called the Extension, and public performances, which comprise the Vero Beach International Music Festival.
With so much community interest we wanted to share an email we received from Mike Block on September 16, 2016 captioned “End of Summer Updates from Mike Block.”
I’m finally resurfacing from the craziness of summer and recovering from one heck of a head cold! I’m feeling well enough now to catch you all up with some summer highlights, as well as some upcoming shows! Hope to see you in the near future! 🙂 -Mike
Summer highlights include playing with some of my favorite cellists at a sold-out show at Chicago’s Symphony Center in June. Check out this fun backstage video of us that went viral, featuring Yo-Yo Ma and 4 cellists of the Chicago Symphony waltzing with their cellos! Its got over 500,000 views 🙂 Speaking of waltzing cellos, I was awarded all 14 Patent claims by the US Gov for my cello strap design.
In July, I had an exciting time at RockyGrass Bluegrass Festival performing with legends Tony Trischka, Mike Marshall, Darol Anger, Bryan Sutton, Michael Daves, Andy Hall, and Missy Raines in a set promoting the Bluegrass school of our online-teaching site, http://www.ArtistWorks.com. Speaking of education, we had a truly wonderful batch of weeks with participants and faculty of Mike Block String Camp, http://www.mikeblockstringcamp.com/main.html, and Silkroad’s Global Musician Workshop, http://www.silkroadproject.org/posts/global-musician-workshop-2016, featuring Guest Artist Bela Fleck, and this summer included the debut of the new “Global Musician Workshop @ Tanglewood Music Center” in August.
After that I joined Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble on a national tour, ending with a near sold-out show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The concert review included a great picture in the LA Times. 🙂
I also spoke and performed at the innaugural 21st Century Musician Symposium last weekend, http://21cmposium.21cm.org, and on Monday I began my 5th year of teaching at the Berklee College of Music.

I’ll try to be in touch again soon to share another long overdue Bach in the Bathroom video, and announce 2017 dates for Mike Block String Camp and Global Musician Workshop! 🙂
Take care! – Mike
