Haiti Partners’ mission is to Help Haitians change Haiti through education.  It is to provide students with educational opportunities in primary schools and churches. The best chance for change comes when we work closely with the individuals and with the institutions that can transform a community.

Haiti Partners was founded in 2009 by John Engle and Kent Annan to help Haitians change Haiti through education. Many people have shaped who Haiti Partners is through their generosity and work.

Their experience and programs go back to when John first moved to Haiti in 1991. Kent moved to Haiti in 2003. Several of their core Haitian and American staff have been collaborating for more than a dozen years to develop the core programs and approach of their work. They draw on Haiti Partners’ experience as they keep pushing ahead toward their vision.

Here are five values that guide their work in Haiti and North America:

RESPECT

Respect the dignity, voice, and potential of each person.  The staff listens to every person involved in their work. This guides how they work with children in schools, students in seminary, community members, and their supporters around the world.

People can never be the means to an end – even if the end we’re working for is justice. Each individual is a child of God and deserves to be treated accordingly. Whether they’re working with someone who donates hundreds of thousands of dollars or is an illiterate subsistence farmer, they respect them equally. Respect guides everything from our personal interactions to their long-term strategic planning.

COLLABORATION

Collaborate for more effective, productive, and joyful partnerships. Haiti Partners believes work is better done together. Each person involved has a voice for influencing the direction and outcomes. Various perspectives lead to a more holistic vision that benefits from the talents and perspectives of all involved. Whether they’re partnering with a seminary, a school, or social business, true collaboration brings together more talents, possibilities, and hope.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Be responsible to everyone connected with their work. They strive to steward the generous gifts of our supporters to ensure every dollar is used wisely. They undergo a full, independent audit each year. As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians, “we are taking pains to do what is right, not only in the eyes of God but in the eyes of others.”

Haiti Partners follows both U.S. and Haitian laws; as well as the best practices laid out by charity evaluators like Guidestar. They also work to be accountable to the people they serve and empower, by inviting and soliciting their feedback at every step along the way, and by committing to meaningful, measurable results that translate into real change.

FAITH

Haiti Partners follows Jesus in pursuit of justice and compassion. When we follow Jesus our lives are transformed – and we’re to be part of transforming the lives of other people.

When he started his ministry in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free…” Haiti Partners wants to be led in this redemptive way, by God’s grace, as we confess the historic founding doctrine of the faith, the Apostle’s Creed.

LEARNING

Learn, improve, and share with humility and gratitude. As an organization focused on education, learning is on their mind every moment of every day. Even after many years of working in Haiti, it’s essential for Haiti Partners to find new ideas and practices that can help them make a more meaningful difference. By cultivating a posture of humility and gratitude, Haiti Partners can remain open to these ideas, whether they come from someone who just finished their PhD or just finished 2nd grade. And part of the responsibility of learning is also to find good, humble ways to share what they’re learning with others.

WHAT HAITI PARTNERS DOES:

~ QUALITY SCHOOLS ~

A Haiti Partners school

Nearly 50% of Haitian school age children don’t go to school. Haiti Partners develops schools that help children realize their potential while driving community development and lifelong learning.  They currently run one school of their own and partner with six more, enabling students to attend school without exorbitant costs.

~ HOLISTIC CHURCHES ~

A lack of study resources and the controlling style of many pastors means most Haitians can’t study the Bible or have their voices heard. With nearly 85% of Haitians identifying as Christians, and churches playing important roles in communities across the country, the root problem isn’t a lack of belief or love. But 500 years of slavery and oppression have given a broken model of leadership to pastors and leaders who don’t receive much training.

Haiti Partners’ approach is to work with both institutions and individuals, to help the Haitian Church develop leaders who create resources and mobilize churches to deepen faith and engage for justice.

~ ENTREPRENEURSHIP ~

Haiti Partners is also piloting an entrepreneurship curriculum whereby students make hand made paper out of banana bark and corn husks and other plant fiber.  It is esthetically pleasing in terms of how it looks and feels.  The entrepreneurial aspect is that students learn how to sell the paper, which is gaining increased interest in the US. They are learning marketing, as well as fundraising, inasmuch as artists donate their paintings at various events they are sold to raise funds.

Please join the Haiti Partners’ luncheon on February 10 at Costa d’ESTE Beach Resort and Spa to to have a delicious lunch and hear about what Haiti Partners is doing here and on the ground in Haiti.
