MANY PEOPLE HERE IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, FL HAVE FOUND ANCIENT ARTIFACTS WALKING ON THE BEACH OR DIGGING IN THEIR YARD, BUT DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF WHAT THEY FOUND.

Two people in Florida most likely to identify what you found are going to be available to study and identify your artifact at a Artifact and Fossil Road Show on April 13, 2017 at the Heritage Center in Vero Beach (2140 14th Avenue) from 5:00 p.m to 9:00 p.m.

The two experts who will help identify your artifact(s) are Dr. Richard Hulbert and Dr. Andy Hemmings.

Dr. Hulbert is a Florida Natural History Museum paleontologist and collections manager.

Dr. Andy Hemmings is Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute archaeologist, who has been the project lead on the Old Vero Site Dig, since 2014.

Dr. Hulbert knows about as much about what ancient or current creatures might be in Florida soils or waterways as anyone in Florida, having collected and curated thousands of specimens through the State for the Gainesville, FL Museum.

Dr. Hemmings is a Florida paleo-archeologist who received is MA and Ph.D from the University of Florida.  He has worked extensively in Paleoindian archaeology and anthropology, focusing on the earliest Floridians, their cultures, tools and deposits.  He is an expert on lithics, or stone tools.

If you have an artifact(s) that bewilder you, as to its history and where it came from, Dr. Hulbert and Dr. Hemmings will help you help you identify what you have.  Bring anything you have, from fossils, spear points, arrow heads, old bones or other discoveries you would like to be identified.

In addition to helping you identify your special discovery, or are just curious about the past of Vero Beach and the State of Florida and what’s hidden in our State’s river’s creeks, and soils and why those artifacts are here, come to see a demonstration of local fossil collections, a flint napping demonstration, a stone technology display, and other exhibits.
