Hurricane Irma: Indian River County, FL Emergency Operations Center Update.

THE INDIAN RIVER COUNTY EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER (EOC) WOULD LIKE TO MAKE YOU AWARE OF THE FOLLOWING:

The EOC will conduct the following scheduled media briefings:

  • Thursday, September 7 at 2:00 PM at the EOC briefing room.
  • Friday, September 8, at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM at the EOC briefing room.
  • Saturday, September 9, at 8:00 AM, 2:00 PM, and 8:00 PM at the EOC briefing room.

All media is encouraged and welcome to attend these briefings.

All City of Vero Beach Recreation facilities and activities/programs held at Leisure Square, the Vero Beach Community Center, Riverside Racquet Complex and the fountains at Royal Palm Pointe will be closed beginning Friday, September 8th until further notice.

In addition, City beaches including Jaycee Beach, Humiston Beach and South Beach will be unguarded beginning Friday, September 8th until further notice.

The Office of the Clerk to the Board and the Value Adjustment Board will be closed on Thursday, September 7, 2017 and Friday, September 8, 2017.

The deadline to file a Petition with the Indian River County Value Adjustment Board has been extended to Wednesday, September 13th due to Hurricane Irma.

The Mental Health Collaborative will be closed on Thursday, September 7 and Friday, September 8. Executive Director Brett Hall will be on call should a community need arise.

The City of Sebastian will be open until noon on Friday, September 8. The Sebastian City Clerk’s Office will be staffed until 4:30 PM on Friday for elections qualifications.

The Indian River County Property Appraiser’s Office will be closed at noon on Thursday, September 7th, and all day Friday, September 8th.

Indian River County Traffic Operations is reducing the number of signal heads at all span wire intersection in preparation for Hurricane Irma. There will be only one signal head for each direction at most intersections, we are requesting that the public take extra care at these intersections.

Waste Management will continue normal garbage and recycling service until Saturday morning.

The following Indian River County Facilities will be closed beginning Friday:

  • Beaches
  • Parks
  • Shooting Range
  • Aquatic Centers
  • Libraries*
  • Intergenerational Center
  • Campgrounds
  • Sandridge Golf Course**
  • *The Brackett Library will also be closed on Thursday
    **Sandridge will provide tee times until noon on Friday.

A local state of emergency was declared by County Administrator Jason Brown at 1:00 PM today, Thursday, September 5.

All Indian River County Offices will be closed on Friday and Monday. Most banks and stores are closing Friday at noon. Voluntary evacuation orders are in effect for low lying areas, substandard housing and manufactured homes, and those who may be impacted by storm surge such as the barrier island and areas east of US 1. Mandatory evacuation for those areas will begin on Saturday at 8:00 AM.

Emergency shelters will open on Saturday at 8:00 AM. The following shelters will open:

  • Freshman Learning Center, 1507 19th Street
  • Oslo Middle School, 480 20th Avenue SW
  • Sebastian River Middle, 9400 CR 512
  • Fellsmere Elementary School, 50 North Cypress Street
  • Liberty Magnet, 6850 81st Street
  • Treasure Coast Elementary, 8955 85th Street

As those shelters open and begin to fill, the need to open other will be assessed.

Hurricane Irma remains a dangerous Category 5 hurricane.  No watches or warnings have been issued for Indian River County yet. However, it is becoming increasingly likely that a major hurricane (Category 3 or 4) will be in our vicinity Sunday into early Monday.

VOLUNTARY EVACUATIONS FOR INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – Effective today (Thursday, September 7, 2017) beginning at 2:00 p.m. for the following areas:
· Barrier island
· Manufactured homes
· Low-lying areas
· Sub-standard housing
· All areas east of U.S. #1

MANDATORY EVACUATIONS FOR INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – Effective Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 8:00 a.m. for the following areas:
· Barrier island
· Manufactured homes
· Low-lying areas
· Sub-standard housing
· All areas east of U.S. #1

The following shelters in Indian River County will be open starting on Saturday, September 9 at 8:00 a.m.:
· Freshman Learning Center (1507 19th Street, Vero Beach)
· Oslo Middle School (480 20th Avenue SW, Vero Beach)
· Sebastian River Middle School (9400 C.R. 512, Sebastian)
· Fellsmere Elementary School (50 N. Cypress Street, Fellsmere)
· PET FRIENDLY SHELTER Liberty Magnet School (6850 81st Street, Vero Beach). No pre-registration necessary. Bring the following: Collar, leash, current shot records, crate/carrier, litter box (if applicable), food and water (with bowls), medications
· SPECIAL NEEDS SHELTER Treasure Coast Elementary School (8955 85th Street, Sebastian)

As of noon today, September 10, all bridges to the barrier island will be closed for travel. Once wind speeds drop below tropical storm force speeds, the bridges will be assessed. When they are open and deemed safe for travel, another update will be provided.
