Clean Water Coalition Announces Water Quality Grants for Vero Beach and Indian River County, FL.

Vero Beach and Indian River County Secure Over $35 Million in Environmental Grants for Water Quality Projects!

In a significant development for environmental protection and water quality improvement in our community, both the City of Vero Beach and Indian River County have achieved notable success in securing substantial State funding for key initiatives.

The state recently announced an allocation of funds, with $210 million earmarked for the Water Quality Improvement Grant Program and $100 million for the Indian River Lagoon Grant program. The City of Vero Beach applied for multiple grants for their new Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant to be built on airport property, and was a recommended recipient of both of these grant programs. Specifically, the city has been awarded $5 million from the Indian River Lagoon Water Quality Improvements Program and $20 million from the Water Quality Improvements Grant Program, amounting to a total of $25 million.

Indian River County was also successful in securing grants. Two major septic-to-sewer projects in the county have been granted funding: the Hobart Landing Septic-to-Sewer Project, receiving $3.3 million, and the Orchid Island Estates Septic-to-Sewer Project receiving $7.425 million. These two projects address long-standing environmental issues and are critical for the restoration and improvement of the Indian River Lagoon as both areas are located directly on the IRL. Converting septic tanks in the county will be neither fast nor inexpensive, but it is important to prioritize those properties in close proximity to the Lagoon.

Combined, these efforts by the City of Vero Beach and Indian River County represent a significant advancement in the region’s ongoing commitment to improving water quality and ensuring the health and sustainability of the Indian River Lagoon. The CWC, along with the community, appreciates the work of staff and cooperation of the residents as these vital projects move forward, bolstered by significant financial contributions from the State.
